Brady’s Blog April ’14 Restarting The Hamster

Hammy and I have just been getting started again after a long, dreary, and bleak winter. The winter was torturous because the ground was too snowy to ride! It drove me crazy. I couldn’t wait for the winter to end. I sighed in relief when I finally got to ride and I bet Hammy was feeling the same. I actually had to fish the halter out of his expectant mouth quite a number of times. It was cute for a little bit but then it got really annoying and almost as maddening as the winter itself!  I think he’s cute but bless his soul; he can get really infuriating if you give him time to show you that side, (usually around ten minutes around him). I feel like a brand new rider because I had time to think about my riding. I feel the pressure in the leg and the response he gives to that stimulus. Hammy and I cantered and in the beginning he was resistant, but he grew into being a nice little pony towards the end, I should mention the biggest problem was getting him to stop gently. When he stopped, HE STOPPED, almost to a dead walk! I wanted him to trot nicely not lope around. I trotted him nicely though. You cannot expect much progress however to happen in the first three days of riding even if you want to. I look forward to a very productive season and I’ll keep you posted on progress!
